No-Sew Skirt from a Man's Shirt

One of my favorite places to find cute fabric to upcycle is Goodwill and the Salvation Army.  (And my hubby's closet of course! shhh…)  The Salvation Army is the best because their prices are usually lower, plus every day of the week a different category of items is 50% off.

I visited the Salvation Army last month in search of a green polo I could make into a skirt for St. Patty's Day.  I definitely scored with this green and white polo.  The wide stripes make it just perfect for a skirt!

How to make a skirt out of a shirt:

If you have ever wondered how to make a skirt without sewing, this project is perfect for you!

I decided to use a man's knit shirt for the fabric of the skirt and I used a craft/fabric glue called Speed Sew to make my "stitches", but just about any permanent fabric glue will work for the areas that needed "stitching."

Just FYI,  the speed sew fabric glue I used holds up great, but my only complaint is that they need to work on the nozzle.  It comes out in an uneven line, so you have to use something to spread it out evenly.  It would be so much better with a narrower elongated tip, for precise application.

Generally, when I look for shirts to upcycle, I try to find the largest size I can get so I have the most fabric I can cut up and reassemble and sew with.

BUT, since we won't be cutting pattern pieces, a smaller shirt will work better in this case.  A smaller shirt will keep the skirt fullness under control and reduce bulkiness around the waistline.

When choosing a shirt to work with, make sure you'll be able to get the length needed from below the armhole seam to the bottom hem.

If I had used an XL or XXL on my size 7 daughter, there would have been too much fabric bulk around the waist. The shirt I used for this no-sew skirt was a man's medium polo shirt.

And it was perfect!!!

Are you ready to make a skirt?  You'll love how easy it is!

How to make a no sew skirt (10 minute skirt)

Items needed:

  • Large shirt to upcycle
  • permanent fabric glue (this one or this one would be good ones to try)
  • about a yard of 1/2 ribbon or twill tape (I used twill tape)
  • Safety pin
  • Fray Check
  • Scissors, ruler
  • Waist to knee measurement.  (Don't have a child handy to measure?  Refer to this chart.)

Instructions:

1.  Determine your skirt length, add 1.5 inches to that number.

2.  Lay out your shirt.  Measuring from the bottom, cut the shirt to your length plus 1.5.

3.  To create the casing, add a line of fabric glue around the top/cut edge of the shirt.  It's easier if you just try to do about 6 – 8 inches at a time.

4.  Fold the glue-coated edge over about 1.25 inches.  (This creates a casing to pull the drawstring through.)  Keep going until you have glued all the way around the skirt.  Let glue dry for 10 to 30 minutes.

5.  Turn your skirt to the front and find the center of the casing.  Draw two lines about 5/8 inch apart on the casing.  Snip these open with your scissors.

6.  Seal the edges of the sniped fabric with fray check.  (Let it dry.)

7.  Using a safety pin, thread ribbon, or twill tape through the casing.  Seal the cut ends of the drawstring and you're done!
